Unit 6 Westward Expansion (2 weeks)
SS4H6 The student will explain westward expansion of America between 1801 and 1861.
a. Describe territorial expansion with emphasis on the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the acquisitions of Texas (the Alamo and independence), Oregon (Oregon Trail), and California (Gold Rush and the development of mining towns).
b. Describe the impact of the steamboat, the steam locomotive, and the telegraph on life in America.
c. Describe the impact of westward expansion on Native Americans.

EXTRA CREDIT SOCIAL STUDIES
Choose One:
1. Create a timeline of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
· Begin timeline with President Jefferson selecting Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition in 1803
· End with the return of the expedition in St. Louis in 1806
· Must include 10 events between the 1803 and 1806.
· Include importance of event with timeline entry
2. Create a map of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
· On a US map draw the route followed by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Do not print a map showing the route followed from the internet, it will not be accepted.
· Label Camp Wood, Fort Mandan, Fort Clatsop, and Great Falls
· Label the locations where they met the Sioux, Shoshone, and Nez Perce Indians
Extra credit assignment is due Monday 4/30/12.
